The soft tissue hanging at the bottom of the ear is called the earlobe. This piercing usually heals faster as blood supply to the lobe is more. The piercer should ensure that the piercing is done in the centre of the earlobe. In an earlobe piercing, you can wear a ring, a barbell or a labret. Barbells and labrets having a length of less than 8 mm are preferred, but in case of rings, the length can vary up to 10 to 12 mm.
The gauge would depend upon the proportions of the earlobe. Usually, a gauge of up to 8 ga (3.2 mm) proves to be suitable. In certain cases, dermal punch method is used to make an initial piercing with a larger gauge. This ensures that the piercing never closes. However, one should be seriously committed before undertaking this type of piercing.
