The large area of tissue that forms the back of the ear is called the Conch. Some people use large Ball Closure Rings (BCR), Captive Bead Rings (CBR) in such piercings, but a labret or barbell is ideal for accelerating the healing process of the piercing. The gauge can be up to 8 ga (3.2 mm), but it should be only a little longer than the thickness of the tissue. Generally, 8 mm length is appropriate.
A Conch piercing takes about 8 - 16 weeks to heal completely.
