A clitoris piercing may require 4 to 6 weeks to heal completely. Clitoral hood piercings are more common as compared to clitoris piercings. If the clitoris is large and can support the piercing appropriately and the piercing is done at an appropriate location, a clitoris piercing is generally not harmful. The width of the clitoris should not be less than 1/4 inch and the jewelry should not be restricted by the hood. Usually, a piercing tends to migrate, create scarring or get rejected if the jewelry is restricted or it gets twisted under the hood. The nerve endings in the glans clitoris are similar in number to that in the glans penis. If a very small clitoris is pierced or if the piercing is undertaken through the clitoris shaft and through the dorsal nerve, there may be damage to the nerve. A large amount of bleeding and consequent loss of blood may occur when the piercing is undertaken through the clitoris shaft. Either horizontal or vertical piercing can be done in case of an exposed clitoris. In case of a hooded clitoris, it would be ideal to do a vertical piercing, which would help to avoid the jewelry from getting twisted. However, in case of a narrow pubic area or an outer labia that is large, a horizontal piercing would be ideal. If the clitoris is loosely hooded or is not hooded, rings would be the most suitable jewelry for a horizontal piercing. In some cases where clitoris piercing is to be done, the glans of the clitoris is devoid of sensitivity because it has been exposed. Some women have been known to have had orgasms naturally soon after undergoing this piercing. However, as the piercing gets used to the jewelry and the area of the piercing heals, this sensitivity decreases. Barbells having a gauge of 16 to 14 are considered ideal for use in the initial stages. The length of the barbell should be 1/16 inch more than the width of the piercing. Captive bead rings having a gauge of 16 to 14 and a diameter of 5/16 to 7/16 inches would also be considered appropriate.
