In a scaffold piercing, two different tissue piercings are joined by using a single barbell. Sometimes, separate jewelry is used in both the piercings and they are allowed to heal separately. Sometimes, one PTFE Barbell is used in both piercings and that tends to reduce the stress on the tissue. The piercings should be properly marked so that the gauge can easily travel through them. Generally a gauge of 14 ga (1.6 mm) is considered to be ideal.
