Horizontal clitoral hood piercings take about 4 to 6 weeks to heal completely. Such a piercing is undertaken through the prominent vertical fold of hood tissue. The piercing is done at a distance of about 3/8 to 1/2 inch upward from the edge of the hood. The piercing is done through the hood itself. This type of piercing cannot be undertaken in some females because of lack of sufficient loose tissue to undertake the piercing. The clitoris as well as the hood generally withdraw when the user is standing. This may make the piercing painful for the user. Hence it is necessary that the piercer select the point of the piercing and the type of jewelry to be worn in it with due care. The appropriate type of jewelry should be selected and the piercing should be done in such a way that the bead is positioned on the clitoris tip. Such a piercing tends to be highly arousing when the clitoris is exposed. In case the clitoris is not exposed, the ring may not be felt except when weight is applied to the jewelry. Beads having a diameter of 7/32 to 1/4 inch are found to be more arousing because they have more weight and surface area. A ring can also excite the clitoris shaft when weight is applied. Rings that have a large gauge tend to more rousing. Captive bead rings having a gauge of 10 to 14 and a diameter of 3/8 to 1/2 inch are considered to be ideal for initial use. The diameter of the ring should exceed the width of the piercing by at least 1/8 inch. If the piercee tends to find pressure or abrasion during intercourse stimulating, rings having a thicker gauge might be considered. This has usually been observed to be more restful to the user because there is less probability of pinching or tearing in this case. The ring might get twisted in females who have a small pubic area and/or an outer labia that is big, which may lead to discomfort and pain. Similarly, women in whom the pubic area is pressed against by the thighs may find this piercing uncomfortable. In such situations, a ring that is shaped like a tear would be more suitable than a round ring. As the ring is narrow in shape, it does not get caught between the outer labia and hence is not twisted or pulled. Thus it is less painful to the user and the chances of migration or tearing are reduced. Rings having a width of about 3/8 inch and a length of 1/2 inch or 1/2 inch width and 5/8 inch length are most commonly used. Jewelry having a thicker gauge can also be used to reduce the incidence of twisting of the jewelry, so that migration and tearing can be reduced.
